Rideau Club

The Rideau Club in Ottawa, Canada is a private club in the Canadian capital.

History

The club was founded in 1865 and was until a fire in 1979, directly opposite the Parliament building in Ottawa. The land should be expropriated in the same year by the Canadian government for an extension of the U.S. Embassy. The club is now located on the top floor of a commercial building in downtown Ottawa.

Club rules

Today, the club is the meeting place of the elite of Canadian politics and business capital. Only in the 1970s, the restriction was lifted on male members and female guests not since denied admission.

He was one of the first clubs in North America, which abolished the secret ballot method (black ball ballot system), in which a single black ball in the ballot box prevented the admission of a new member. Through this system, the admission of Jewish or colored candidates could be blocked.
