Ridgeway (road)

Height ways are driving or walking trails, on a mountain ridge ( ridge paths ) or parallel to it and therefore relatively flat run.

Before the construction of the railway networks were high paths ( elevated roads ), which were (often on the watersheds ) was applied instead of in the valleys to ridge, the regional and inter-regional traffic. Their origin can often be up in Germanic or Celtic times to trace. The level paths had the advantage that they were drier had to be crossed paths as in the valley and no streams and rivers.

Since the 19th century were in the mountains " height ways" often created by Alpine clubs and usually provide the fastest connection between shelters, since they largely avoid major head losses.

Today's hiking trails near the valley go but back on old paths: In many valleys were - where no old streets or mule tracks ran as a long-distance routes - level height paths applied to the slopes of which then proceeded steep random paths in serpentine each to the nearest settlements. So you avoided on the one hand the Route on the valley floor, which was structurally routes usually much more complex and maintenance-intensive, and could on the other hand goods carry a good part of the way with the wagon, only the random paths had to be overcome by foot or pack animal.

Known Höhenwege

Examples of historical high routes in Germany are the Rennsteig in the Thuringian Forest and the Rhine trail between Bonn and Wiesbaden. These paths originated to avoid obstacles in the valley, such as swampy passages.
