Riekele Borger

Rykle Borger (also Riekele Borger, born May 24, 1929 in Wieuwerd, community Littenseradiel, Friesland, † December 27, 2010 in Göttingen ) was a German Assyriologist Dutch origin, who was professor of Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the University of Göttingen from 1962 to 1997.

Life

After graduation in Breda Borger studied from 1946 Oriental Studies and Protestant Theology at Leiden University. After an oral examination in Oriental Studies (1951) and theology (1952) and doctorate in Leiden Borger worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Göttingen ( 1954-1955 ) and at the University of Vienna ( 1955-1957 ). In 1958 he returned as a lecturer in Assyriology to Göttingen and habilitated in 1959 at Wolfram von Soden. Then Borger worked as a lecturer at Göttingen Department of cuneiform research until 1962 he was a full professor of Ancient Near Eastern Studies with a focus on Assyriology there. Since 1978 he was a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen.

In December 2009, Borger asked the age of 80 years ( after 53 years in Germany ) successfully German citizenship.

At Borgers research included the edition Assyrian texts, biblical philology and text bibliography, Grammatology ( doctrine of Scripture ) and lexicography. He wrote, among other things, the handbook of cuneiform literature (Göttingen 1967).
