History

For the earlier history see Ludwig South-North Railway and railway line Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt - Aalen.

The Ries railway was interrupted in recent years repeatedly at different places by landslides. The longest of these interruptions was the image Wasen tunnel between home and leek Aufhausen December 2002 to December 2003. The affected tunnel entrance, however, was carefully restored, so that the existence of the route is secured for the moment. During the same period, from February 2003 to July 2003, there was due to a flood and a larger slope slip between Ebermergen and Donauwörth, whereby the traffic almost came to a complete standstill on this track. These circumstances have prompted considerations to shut down the route. Prior to this road block many trains ran through from the Rems Railway to Donauwörth. Since unblocking the other hand, almost entirely independent operation takes place on the Ries Railway.

The operation on the route was announced in May 2006 by the Bavarian Railway Company and the transport company in Baden -Württemberg. The contract was awarded to DB Regio Bayern, the new electric railcars of Class 440 provides on this route, which are designed for low -floor technology and based in Augsburg. You should come gradually in December 2008 and December 2009 for the operation, but the first-stage operation was delayed due to technical problems on the vehicles.

From 24 July 2009 to 15 October 2009, the German railway closed the Ries Railway between Goldshöfe and Nördlingen to renew tracks and superstructure. This measure was part of an extensive 50 million euros according to the company refurbishment project for the route Schorndorf - Aalen and the Ries Railway. Also, the platforms of the stations Westhausen, leeks Home, Aufhausen, Bopfingen and Pflaumloch have been updated. Since the timetable change on 11 December 2011 daily from eels from travels an additional train to Munich and back on the train Ries.

The regional plan of East Württemberg region provides free hold the line for a two-pronged expansion. The plan shall include on the Ries Railway run long-distance line from Stuttgart to Munich is proposed, then as inter-regional line. The implementation of these measures is, however, currently not seriously pursued.
