Right whale

Atlantic right whales with calf

The Eubalaena are a genus of whales that includes the Atlantic right whales ( Eubalaena glacialis ), the Pacific right whales ( Eubalaena japonica ) and the southern right whale ( Eubalaena australis) Three species of whales.

Features

The whales of the genus Eubalaena include as baleen whales of the largest species of whales and thus one of the largest species in general. The two right whales and the southern right whales are about the same size and weight; they are usually about 15 feet long, maximum body length can reach 18 meters. Your weight is 50-56 tons. Characteristic are the long, thin black beards, which are at the northern and the southern right whale caper about 2.5 meters long.

As whales they have no furrows on the throat, which are typical of the rorqual. Moreover, they lack a dorsal fin and flippers are quite short, but strongly developed. They have an extremely thick layer of blubber, which the other whales significantly exceeds in thickness. As a resident usually very cold seas up to the Southern Ocean, the thick blubber ensures the insulation against the cold water.

The right whales and the southern right whale differ from other species of whales and also by kinship related bowhead whales by their showy skin growths in the head region; especially the upper and lower jaws and eye area are affected. These skin growths are colonized by barnacles and Walläusen ( Cyamus ). It is striking that these so-called " Hats" bulls are more pronounced than in females.

Dissemination

The species prefer to live in cold seas, however, on their walks they reach warm sea areas in the subtropics. Almost all waters around the Arctic are inhabited by right whales, as well as large parts of the North Atlantic and the North Pacific. Here live the Atlantic right whales and the Pacific right whales.

The southern hemisphere is occupied by the southern right whale, inhabits all oceans except for the southern coasts of Antarctica. The southern coast of Australia, parts of the coast of South America and the southern coast of Africa belong to the area inhabited by him.

Way of life

Eubalaena species are slow-moving whales, like all baleen whales, their food with their beards out of the water seven; remain mainly copepods caught by them, but also small fish.

System

The genus Eubalaena includes the Atlantic right whales ( Eubalaena glacialis ), the Pacific right whales ( Eubalaena japonica ) and the southern right whale ( Eubalaena australis) in three ways. This, together with the bowhead whale ( Balaena mysticetus ), the family of right whales.

The species Eubalaena glacialis and Eubalaena japonica were led up to the year 2000 as a subspecies of the species Eubalaena glacialis. Recent DNA studies substantiated the hypothesis that the two subspecies are two separate species.
