Rigny

Rigny is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Rigny situated at an altitude of 194 m above sea level, 4 km north-east of Gray and about 40 km northwest of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the west of the département, in the plane of Gray, on the northern edge of the Talniederung the Saône.

The area of ​​12.72 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the middle Saône Valley. The southern part of the municipality is occupied by the Saône valley, which has a width of about three kilometers and is on average 190 m. History

The territory of Rigny was inhabited in prehistoric times. The earliest evidence of human presence date back to the Magdalenian. Various findings are evidence of the settlement during the Gallo- Roman period. In addition, also a burgundy grave was discovered.

In the Middle Ages Rigny belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The local government was responsible for the first lords of Fouvent before the village in 1203 was transferred to the rule Autrey. In 1311 the villagers liberties were awarded. In the context of the Thirty Years' War in 1636 Rigny ravaged and killed many people. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Rigny is a member of the 16- villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Val de Gray.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Étienne was rebuilt in 1720. It has a rich interior, including the pulpit ( 17th century ), a stucco altar (18th century) and two paintings by Prud'hon (1794 ). At the site of the former manor house, a new castle was built in the 17th century, which was extended in the 19th century and now houses a hotel and restaurant.
