Rimo I

BWf1

The Rimo I, 7,385 m above sea level, is the main summit of Rimo massif in the northern part of the Rimo Muztagh in the Karakoram in India. The mountain is about 20 km from the mouth of the glacier Siachen glacier. Rimo means " banded mountain". As Pakistani Make a Japanese expedition in 1984 the ascent of Rimo I be approved, this was the external cause to the Siachen conflict, in which the Indian Army the 6,400 -meter-high Siachen Glacier and the Pakistani army occupied the surrounding mountains.

The Rimomassiv consists of four mountains that bear the name Rimo: Rimo I, Rimo II ( 7,373 m), which is a relatively minor peaks in the north of Rimo I, Rimo III ( 7,233 m) and Rimo IV ( 7,169 m) are single Mountain in the north of the Rimo I. the massif is on the east side covered by the large centrally located on the north side Rimo glacier and the South Rimo glacier, but also from the smaller North Terong glacier on the west side.

Because of its remote location in the middle of the eastern Karakoram, the Rimo massif was little known and up in the 20th century little visited. The Explorers Filippo de Filippi and Philip and Jenny Visser came to this area only in 1914 or 1929. Isolation and the political situation between India and Pakistan in this region, which manifests itself in the occupation of the near Siachen Glacier have, for insulation contributed the massif. India controls all access to this massif.

The first ascent of Rimo massif attempt was made by a Japanese expedition, the summit had no success. 1984, the Rimo IV was successfully climbed by an expedition of the Indian Army and 1985 by a well-organized Indo- British expedition, led by Harish Kapadia Himalaya experts. Dave Wilkinson and Jim Fotheringham of the latter expedition ascended the Rimo III, but they did not reach the summit of Rimo I.

The only successful ascent of Rimo I managed an Indo- Japanese team in 1988, which was led by Hukam Singh and Yoshio Ogata. They started in the south west of the mountain, up to significant Ibex Pass on the south side of the mountain and completed the ascent of a technically difficult climb of 1,500 m to the summit successfully.
