Riñihue Lake

Riñihue Lake is a large lake in southern Chile.

It is located in the north of the X region ( Región de los Lagos). The city lies on the western Riñihue shore of the lake near the Panamericana. On the east bank of the place Enco and the volcano is Choshuenco with 2,415 m height.

The Lago Riñihue has an area of ​​approximately 77 km ² and a maximum depth of 323 m. The lake is an old glacial lake of glacial origin. The lake is a deep blue crystal clear lake. There are many coves and beaches. In summer the water temperatures will be around 20 ° C. The lake is full of fish, you start there, for example, trout and salmon.

History

On December 16, 1575 Valdivia was destroyed by a very severe earthquake, whose magnitude is estimated in the vicinity of the strongest known earthquake of 22 May 1960. The quake caused major landslides and spilled the outflow of Lake Riñihue. This dammed up and the dam broke formed four months later and flooded the city. The administrator of the city and chronicler of Chile Pedro Mariño de Lobera took care of the reconstruction and aid to victims.

After the huge earthquake of May 22, 1960 fell from the lake over the Río San Pedro huge water and sludge masses towards Valdivia and set on the way devastating damage.

Economy

The tourism, fishing and forestry plays an important role in the area. The lake is ideal for sailing and fishing.
