Rio de Janeiro Antwren

The Rio de Janeiro - ants panties ( Myrmotherula fluminensis ) is a rare species of bird in the family of ant birds. It is endemic in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro.

Description

The Rio de Janeiro - ants panties reached a size of 9.5 cm. The male is livid with a black bib which extends up to the upper abdomen. The wings are black with white spots on the ceiling. The black cock is unchecked. The slender beak is dark. The female has a gray head. The throat is bright. The top is pale buff - reddish brown. The tail is colored bright. The underside buff - reddish brown. The voice consists of nasal " Kiu " sounds.

Habitat and behavior

Of his life little is known. The type specimen was discovered in 1982 in a partially isolated and highly disturbed forest plot. The following observations in the Reserva Ecologica de Guapi Acu were in a young secondary forest at an altitude 35-200 m. The most common birds in mixed flocks with other insectivorous bird species, including the Southern Einfarbameisenschlüpfer ( Myrmotherula unicolor) were observed. When foraging it remains at less than two feet above the ground between the dense wine roots.

Status

The Rio de Janeiro - ants panties is only from the holotype of 1982 known which was collected at Santo Aleixo near the community Magé in central Rio de Janeiro. Evidence from the Reserva Ecologica de Guapi Acu from 1994 are not unique, since the nature of the singing here not from the white flanks Ants panties ( Myrmotherula axillary ) is to be distinguished, which occurs in the same region. Presumably, it could act to the Rio de Janeiro - Antwren a hybrid of white flanks Ants panties and Southern Einfarbameisenschlüpfer ( Myrmotherula unicolor) or a local morph of the White flanks Ants panties.
