Río Negro is a province in the center of Argentina on the northern edge of Patagonia. Only since July 27, 1955 Río Negro is a province, before it was a so-called territory.

Geography

Río Negro is surrounded by the province of Neuquén in the West, from the provinces of Mendoza and La Pampa in the north of the province of Buenos Aires in the north- east and by the Province of Chubut in the south. In addition, Río Negro bordered on the west by Chile, and on the southeast by the Atlantic Ocean.

On the huge province of terrain you will find a variety of different landforms. In the east and south covered the Patagonian cuesta, a windy dry steppe, wide areas. To the north are the moderate from the climate valleys of the Río Negro and Río Colorado. The clammy extreme southwest of the province belongs to the southern Andes and is the wettest region of Argentina.

Population

The province is inhabited total thin, but in the upper valley of the Rio Negro to 40 % of the province 's population clustered around the cities of General Roca ( 70,000 inhabitants) and Cipolletti ( 85,000 inhabitants). The largest individual city is the tourist center of San Carlos de Bariloche ( 110,000 inhabitants) in the southern Andes, knocked off of it lies the provincial capital Viedma in the Atlantic coast ( 65,000 inhabitants). The fastest growing city is the port city of San Antonio Oeste, with its beach Las Grutas ( 25,000 inhabitants).

Much of the province 's population (over 55% ) are indeed mestizos, but as a people are the Tehuelche Indians, who before the desert campaign of General Roca ( 1860-1880 ) almost occupied the entire province territory, as good as gone. Some Mapuche, however, still live in the southern Andes.

Administrative divisions

The administrative divisions of the province of Río Negro was established in the province Constitution of 1958 and 1988 modified. After that, the province is divided into 13 departments. The municipalities are grouped into two classes. The municipalities with more than 2,000 inhabitants are called municipios, those under 2,000 inhabitants Comisiones de Fomento. In some cases, municipalities have been declared with a population of less than 2000 by the constitutional revision of 1988 municipios.

Economy

The largest industry is agriculture in the valleys of the Río Negro and Río Colorado. Industry can be found almost exclusively in the high valley of the Río Negro ( General Roca, Villa Regina, Cipolletti ). Great importance have continued to sheep farming and tourism.

Tourism

The city of San Carlos de Bariloche at Nahuel Huapi Lake is one of the most visited tourist centers throughout the country, and in all seasons (winter sports center Cerro Catedral ). The lovely, green and mountainous area around the city and lake is called the " Switzerland of Argentina ", which can be seen in numerous buildings in Bariloche. South of Bariloche is the famous hippie colony El Bolson. The second largest tourist center of the province is the Atlantic coast with the popular seaside resorts of Las Grutas, El Cóndor and Playas Doradas.
