Río Santiago Shipyard

Astillero Río Santiago (abbreviated ARS) is a state-owned Argentine shipbuilding company, headquartered in Ensenada in the province of Buenos Aires. The shipyard is located near La Plata. According to the industry association Federación de la Industria Naval Argentina (short: FINA) is by far the largest ARS shipbuilding company in Argentina.

History

The now under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Industry of the Province of Buenos Aires established companies ARS in 1934 as a state shipyard AFNE ( Astilleros y Fábricas Navales del Estado ) and was initially focused on the construction and maintenance of warships. 1953, the name in Astillero Río Santiago ( ASR) has been changed. 1969 ARS employed approximately 5,500 employees. In the 1990s, the Argentine shipbuilding industry experienced a dramatic decline. In the crisis year 2009, the value of production slumped by almost half.

In recent years, predominantly civilian ships were built again, such as freighters, oil tankers and tug, which are used to support oil platforms. In ARS also six units (1967-1988) of the SD -14 freighters were built.

ARS 2011, employs approximately 2,870 people. Based in the free zone of La Plata ARS shipyard can claims to vessels up to a capacity of 80,000 tonnes and produce offshore equipment of all kinds and also produces steel structures for uses on the mainland. So ARS supplied as the roof for the 53,000 -seat football stadium in La Plata.

In March 2008, the company opened its own ARS Shipbuilding Museum.

One of the most famous ships built by ARS Argentine Navy, is the 1960 which entered service in training sailing ship Libertad.
