Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA ) is one of the largest aluminum producers in the world and is a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Group. The company is organized into three divisions:

  • Bauxite and alumina,
  • Primary aluminum,
  • Technical Products.

History

The company was founded in 1902 as a subsidiary of Alcoa and was given the name "Northern Aluminum Company Limited". In 1925 it was renamed the " Aluminum Company of Canada Limited " and 1928, the elimination of Alcoa as an independent company. In 1945 the company was registered as Alcan.

With Jacques Bougie, who was appointed CEO of Alcan in 1993, the company launched a worldwide expansion. Bougie occurred in 2001, shortly after he acquired the Swiss algroup for Alcan, as CEO back.

Through the corporate takeover of Alusuisse (2000), the packaging division of the former VAW and the French aluminum company Pechiney (2003), the group had grown strong. However, in early 2005, most of the mills was in an independent publicly traded company, Novelis, spun off.

2007 there was an Alcan takeover battle. At times, tried the British-Australian mining group Rio Tinto, as well as the American company Alcoa to take over the group. The offer of Rio Tinto was 39 billion dollars. Alcoa offered above $ 28 billion for Alcan. In July 2007, Alcoa withdrew its offer for Alcan.

The management boards of Rio Tinto and Alcan agreed to a takeover by Rio Tinto, as the Brazilian company CVRD announced to launch a takeover offer. Meanwhile, a purchase price of 38.7 billion U.S. dollars has been set and Alcan will continue to operate as a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. Business leaders and headquarters maintained one. On 23 October 2007, Alcan was merged with the aluminum division of Rio Tinto and renamed Rio Tinto Alcan.

The packaging division was sold to Amcor 2010. 2011 Alcan Engineered Products ( aluminum finishing) was cleaved and has since been an independent company called Constellium.
