RIPE

The Réseaux IP Européens (French for European IP networks, short RIPE ) is a working group for the coordination of the Internet, the origin of the first Regional Internet Registry was.

It originated as a collaboration between the operators of computer networks using the Internet Protocol in Europe for the purpose of creating a pan- European network this technique. Chairman is Robert Blokzijl, like working in networks of physicists themselves.

The inaugural meeting was held on 22 May 1989. 14 people attended. As an example then a network coupling with 64 kbit / s was presented, which was shared by EUnet, NORDUnet, HEPnet and EARN. From EARN came in 1992 with seed funding for the RIPE Network Coordination Centre ( RIPE NCC). The RIPE decide by consensus of working groups recommendations to the RIPE NCC. Since 1997, the registration fee is a fee to the RIPE meeting. Since 2001 the conferences last five days. In May 2009, twenty years after the first meeting, attended by around 400 people.
