Riquewihr

Riquewihr ( German: Riquewihr ) is a commune with 1174 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the district Ribeauvillé, the canton of Kaysersberg and community association Ribeauvillé.

Riquewihr was classified on the basis of his intact townscape from the 16th century as one of the plus beaux villages de France ( most beautiful villages in France ).

Geography

Riquewihr is at the foot of the Vosges, about twelve kilometers north- west of Colmar. The territory of Riquewihr is part of the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges.

History

In the 6th century a Frank founded called Richo an estate called Richovilla, from which developed the site. 1320 received Riquewihr, then in the possession of the Counts of Horburg, the city rights. 1324 the rule Reichenweier was sold to the house Wuerttemberg. From that point on it was next to the County of Württemberg - Montbéliard to the left of the Rhine possessions of the House of Württemberg. To rule Reichenweier served the following locations: Altweier; beblenheim; Castle Bilstein; Hunawihr; Means Weier; ostheim; Riquewihr.

1793, the city became French. The population is mainly Lutheran.

On New Year's Day 2014 in the medieval town center burned down several historic buildings.

Attractions

  • Old Town: Riquewihr is significant because of its unique old town, which is, along with the fortifications almost completely preserved. The truss- decorated upper gate tower Dolder is a landmark of the city.
  • The ruins rich stone from the 13th century with a pentagonal donjon is acute danger of collapse, is located about two kilometers northwest of the city in the forest.
  • With the further north- west in the Burg Bilstein another ruined castle stands on Riquewihrer area.
  • The Musée Hansi shows the work of the graphic designer Jean -Jacques Waltz.
  • The Musée de la Poste ( Post Museum ) is located in former Württemberg Castle.
  • The Musée de la Tour de Voleurs with prison and torture chamber located in the former Jewish quarter.

Economy

Riquewihr is one of the most important wine-growing villages of Alsace. (See Knipperlé ). In addition, the place is heavily reliant on tourism, especially the day tourism aligned.
