Riscle

Riscle ( Gascon: Riscla ) is a commune with 1719 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gers, in the Midi -Pyrénées; it belongs to the district Mirande and is the capital ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Riscle.

Geography

Riscle situated on the river Adour in the wine region Côtes de Saint -Mont. The municipality consists of the villages of Constance, Hitaous and Les Barthères.

History

With the construction of a church in the 9th century, the history of Riscle begins. The settlement around the castle then joined them. In the eleventh century the village had already demonstrates five churches. 1569 Riscle was destroyed by Henri I de Montmorency. A flooding Riscles happened in 1737. Was not until the mid-19th century the church was re- built from scratch.
