Risdon Cove

Risdon Cove on the Derwent was the site of the first European settlement in Van Diemen 's Land, now Tasmania.

In 1803 Lieutenant John Bowen was sent to establish a settlement in Tasmania. His ship, the Lady Nelson anchored at Risdon on September 8, 1803, five days before Bowen on the Albion reached the place.

A year later, in 1804, Lieutenant Colonel David Collins reached accompanied by military and convicts from Port Phillip from the Derwent. Within a few days he gave up Risdon Cove and was considering a new settlement across the river, in the Sullivan Cove. But on February 20 he went near Hunter Iceland on land and founded the present Hobart.
