In 2002, the Rissho University (立正 大学, Rissho daigaku ) celebrated its 130th anniversary, making it one of the oldest universities in Japan. As a seminary of the Nichiren Shuu, a school of Nichiren Buddhism, but its origins date back to 1580.

One of its former directors ( Tanzan Ishibashi ) was from 1956 to 1957 the 55th Prime Minister of Japan. This was regarded as an important economic expert and entered at the time vehemently for the resumption of diplomatic relations with China.
