RIU Hotels

RIU Hotels & Resorts ( RIUSA II, SA or short Riu ) is a Spanish hotel chain with headquarters at the Platja de Palma, Majorca in Spain. 2005, consisting of 109 hotels, 71,000 beds and 17,000 employees chain sat around one billion euros.

Managing partners are Luis Riu Güell and Carmen Riu Güell, the grandson of the founder. Since 1976, the travel group TUI owns one half of the shares in Riu. Riu again since 2004, shares in TUI holds ( currently 5.10% ).

History

Riu was founded in 1953 as a small family of Don Juan Riu, the first hotel was the San Francisco to Mallorca. The original hotel has since been demolished and rebuilt on the same location in Playa de Palma.

In the 1960s, more hotels were built in Mallorca. In the 1980s the company expanded. Hotels were built in the Canary Islands. After this expansion was successful was built in the Dominican Republic in the 1990s the first hotel outside Spain. Within a few years more hotels were built on other islands in the Caribbean and Florida. Today, there are hotels in 17 countries.
