Riudoms

Riudoms is a municipality in the south of Catalonia. It has 6472 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) and is located in the province of Tarragona and the comarca of Baix Camp. From Reus, the capital of the comarca, it is about 5 km away. Riudoms is the birthplace of the architect Antoni Gaudí.

History

Archaeological findings prove that the area of Riudoms was already in the Neolithic and later settled in the Bronze Age. In Roman times, there were several settlements on the territory of the present municipality, especially near the river Maspujols. The official founding of Riudoms on January 25, 1151st The knight Arnau de Palomar received the territory of Riodoms from Norman prince Robert d' Aguiló with the requirement to build a castle here.

Economy

Riudoms was characterized traditionally agricultural. Since the end of the 19th century, the hazelnut was the main product. Later, when the demand fell, was converted to the cultivation of olives. Nowadays most inhabitants engage in farming only as a sideline.
