Rius

Eduardo del Río ( born June 20, 1934 in Zamora, Michoacán, Mexico) under his pen name Rius is known a Mexican intellectual, political cartoonist and author.

Life

In the 1960s, he started drawing in magazine and newspaper publishing, partly on political issues. He made two famous comics, Los Supermachos and Los agachados, which criticized the Mexican government in a humorous way. After this success, he wrote several books, all of which were illustrated by hand and a wide range of political issues, Vegetarianism and religion included. His books were mainly popular also because of its humor. In 1970 the first English version of his book Cuba para principiantes, a humorous comic of Cuban history and revolution was represented. In the U.S., it had the title Cuba for Beginners and became a bestseller. Published in 1975 the book Rius, Marx for Beginners, a cartoon of Karl Marx's life and ideals represented.

Work

As one of the most popular Mexican cartoonist Rius has written over 100 books. He is regarded as a biting political activist and his progressive "left" perspective is often noticeable in his cartoons. He is critical of Mexican neo-liberal dogma, the U.S. government and the Catholic Church. Rius is proponent of Cuban Revolution and had sympathy for the Soviet Union. His success and long career have made ​​him a point of reference for the newer generation of political cartoonist in Mexico. Mexican director Alfonso Arau made ​​1973 a film based on characters from Los Supermachos under the title Calzonzin Inspector.
