The Irthing is a river in northern England near the Scottish border. It rises near the mountain Black Knowe in the Cheviot Hills ( 490 m ASL). It flows near the city of Carlisle in the River Eden. Its length is 55 km. After about 1/3 of its length it traverses the former Roman Hadrian's Wall at Gilsland.

The Irthing is a shallow river that easily breaks its banks after heavy rainfalls. The first section of the river forms almost the southwestern boundary of the Northumberland National Park. In Irthing you find salmon and trout. The place Irthington was named after the river.
