Geography
Location and extent
The expansion of an area of 9370 km ² comprising the department is located in the north of the country on the border with Brazil. It also borders the departments of Artigas, Salto, Tacuarembó and Cerro Largo.
Settlement structure

History
The department was established on October 1, 1884 by a split from the department of Tacuarembó. The name was given Rivera on the basis of the freedom fighter and first president of the Republic, General Fructuoso Rivera.
