Riverton, New Zealand

Riverton or Aparima is a small town on the South Island of New Zealand in the Southland region. It lies at the end of Oreti Beach, 30 km west of Invercargill and is part of the Tourist Road Southern Scenic Route. The island Stewart Iceland is around 45 km away. The city on the Foveaux street known for its rough seas provides a safe haven.

Riverton had the Census 2001 1.653 inhabitants, a decrease of 9.7 % since 1996, his livelihood has traditionally been fishing. However, wins with the gradual decline in fishing, agriculture, especially dairy farming, is becoming increasingly important. History

Riverton was founded by Captain John Howell about 1837 under the name of Jacob 's River at a whaling station existed since 820. Its still preserved house from this period is the oldest building in the South Island. His grave is in the cemetery of the village. Thus, the place could be the oldest European-founded settlement in New Zealand.

On June 9, 1878 a railway branch line from Invercargill was opened to Riverton. Over the next decades, the line was extended and known as the Tuatapere Branch. On July 30, 1976, the line of Tuatapere was shut down to Riverton and renamed the line in Riverton Branch. It was hoped at the time that timber transport would be sufficient for the continued efficient operation of the line. These expectations were not fulfilled, so that the line to Riverton was decommissioned on 15 January 1978. Your steel truss bridge and the embankment were demolished in 2001.
