The Rivière Soliette ( in Haiti) or Arroyo Blanco ( in the Dominican Republic) is a non- constant water-bearing river in the southwest of Hispaniola. More name variations are Rio Blanco, Rivière Soliette, Rio Solheillet, Soleillet Riviere, Riviere Soliette and Rivière Soleillet.

Hydrology

The river rises in the Massif de la Selle in Haiti and flows northward to the Dominican Republic. In the city Jimaní he changes the direction of flow to the east and finally flows into the Lago Enriquillo.

The catchment area of the river comprises approximately 150 square kilometers and extends from an altitude of 2000 m above sea level at the Sur de Vonds Verettes down to 40 m above the sea at the mouth of the river in Lago Enriquillo. The climate is tropical, hot and dry; the average temperature is 28 ° C, the average annual rainfall is 750 mm in the entire river basin, in regularly occurring periods of heavy rain and up to 100 mm in 24 hours. The average discharge is 0.2 m³ / s, but subject from year to year and also within one year of strong fluctuations and can roughly once a decade to reach more than 500 m³ / s.

Events

In the floods of 24 and 25 May 2004, after the International Red Cross 393 inhabitants of the city Jimaní were killed, another 274 were still missing two months after the disaster. This flood was caused by multi-day rainfall. Many victims were immigrants who had come from Haiti without official documents.
