Features

Butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 18-22 millimeters. They have light yellowish forewing shining silky and are somewhat obscured before the hem. The kidneys blemish is cored dark and double black. Transverse lines are brownish, but often weak. The hind wings are white -gray to gray. The palps are slightly curved upwards, a proboscis is present.

Egg

The egg is yellowish, semi-spherical, and coated with a lot of linear longitudinal and transverse ribs. Of the approximately 40 longitudinal ribs about half reached the Mikropylzone.

Caterpillar

Adults caterpillars are short and thick, provided by green color and with wide white side ridge lines. To the point warts are strong, short hair.

Doll

The pupa is green and shows white vertical stripes. The cremaster is provided with short curved bristles.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The Seideneulchen is widespread across North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula to southern Fennoscandia and locally as often. To the east, the species occurs to the Pacific Ocean. She lives in different habitats. These include wet grasslands, ruderal areas, sparse forests, alder forests and settlement areas.

Way of life

The moths fly at times during the day, at dusk and into the night. The Seideneulchen forms two generations a year, flying from late May to early July and from mid-July to early October. Belong to what extent the very late -flying moths to a third generation, needs further clarification. During the day they rest like on blades of grass, where they sit typically with the head down. Sometimes they suck on the flowers of oregano ( Origanum ) or goldenrod species ( Solidago ). They can easily attract by artificial light. Their caterpillars feed on a wide variety of grasses and winter.

Endangering

The Seideneulchen is not at risk in Germany.
