Rob Roy (Cocktail)

The Rob Roy is a classic cocktail. An aromatic short drink it one of the appetizers or before- dinner drinks. It is a variant of Manhattan with the only difference that a Rob Roy is made with Scotch instead of American whiskey and Canadian whiskey. This is the Rob Roy one of the very few known cocktails, prepared with this is not easy to vermixenden spirit.

History

The cocktail was probably made in 1894 at the Waldorf -Astoria in New York and was named after the Scottish folk hero Robert Roy MacGregor. At that time Manhattans were mixed for several years, usually with Rye whiskey, which tasted very much different from blended Scotch. Owes its existence to the Rob Roy on the one hand the launch of Dewar 's Scotch whiskey in the United States, on the other hand takes place in the same year debut of the same name by Reginald De Koven operetta and Harry B. Smith.

Preparation

In historical recipes were mixed Scotch whiskey - preferably a ( mild ) Blended Scotch, so no smoky and peaty single malt - and red Italian vermouth ( Vermouth Rosso ) in equal parts. As today's whiskeys, compared with those of the 19th century, have a lower alcohol content, is rather mixed in a 2:1 ratio today, added splash of Angostura Bitters 1-2, to give the cocktail flavor depth. As in Manhattan can be obtained by using different varieties of wormwood the variants "sweet" ( sweet, with Vermouth Rosso ), "medium" (medium, with equal proportions of red and white, dry vermouth ) and " dry" (dry, exclusively with the white, dry, French Vermouth dry) produced, it being understood as the real Rob Roy without further designation "sweet".

The standard prescription of the International Bartenders Association consists of 4.5 cl Scotch whiskey 2.5 cl Vermouth 1 Dash Angostura and. The ingredients are stirred for about 30 seconds very cold in a mixing glass filled with ice cubes and then strained through a strainer. Is usually served "straight up ", ie, without ice, in a pre-chilled cocktail glass as possible or a V-shaped martini cup, alternatively ice cubes (English " on the rocks" ) in a small tumbler. Classic furniture is like the Manhattan cocktail cherry, but also a simple lemon zest is possible and is preferably used for the drier variants.
