Robert d'Escourt Atkinson

Robert d' Escourt Atkinson (* April 11, 1898, † 28 October 1982) was a British astronomer, physicist and inventor.

In the 1930s he was - along with Friedrich Georg Houtermans - one of the first, representing the idea that the chemical elements are formed in stars. For this he was in 1960 awarded the Eddington Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society.

In 1937 he became chief assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory.

In 1964 he moved to Indiana University, where he retired in 1979.
