Robert de Sorbon

Robert of Sorbon ( born October 9, 1201 Sorbon, † August 15, 1274 in Paris) was a French theologian and chaplain. According to him, the University of Paris ( Sorbonne ) is named.

Life

Sorbon came from a place of the same name near Rethel and was of simple peasant origin. He was a canon at Cambrai and studied at Reims and Paris. In 1250 he became master of theology. In the same year he moved into a house together with an adjacent barn on the Montagne Sainte -Geneviève to teach poor students there. This facility was in 1253 as a theological college ( Collège de Sorbonne ) connected for sixteen students of the University of Paris, and in 1257 by King Louis IX. confirmed.

In the following years Sorbon was the chaplain of the king and ascended to his closest advisors. He was a friend of Jean de Joinville, with whom he rivaled the same time to win the favor of the king. By the king he received in 1258 and 1263 two more houses in which he established colleges of humanities and philosophy. 1266 he was appointed Archdeacon in Laon.
