Robert G. Gallager

Robert Gray Gallager (* May 29, 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American electrical engineer who made fundamental contributions to information theory and the theory of computer networks delivered.

He studied electrical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, and received his diploma and doctoral thesis in 1957 and 1960 respectively at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His thesis and main works deal with the low- density parity - check codes developed by him ( LDPC ), which include within the scope of coding theory to efficient channel coding. LDPC codes are used inter alia in the context of terrestrial digital television standard DVB- T2 as well as in various wireless standards for the correction of transmission errors.

He was honored for his work in 1983 with the Claude E. Shannon Award and in 1990 with the IEEE Medal of Honor. He is currently professor emeritus at MIT.
