Robert Gordon Latham

Robert Gordon Latham, spr. läthäm, (* 1812 in Billing Borough, Lincolnshire, † 1888 ) was an English linguist and ethnologist.

Latham studied at King's College ( University of Cambridge ) medicine. Upon successful completion, he got a job as a junior doctor at Middlesexhospital. From 1823 he held for ten years on in Denmark and Sweden. After his return in 1833 he was appointed as Professor of English Language and Literature at University College London.

Latham was instrumental in the founding of the Philological Society in London. As 1852 in Sydenham (London Borough of Lewisham ) a ethnological department was established at the Crystal Palace, it went back to Latham's initiative.

1863 Latham laid down all his offices and retired into private life.

Reception

Latham's scientific reputation is less justified in his medical because in his linguistic skills. Especially his ethnological and linguistic studies have been praised by experts of his time high. For example, Latham went with his " Treatise on the English language" as one of the first one on the historical development of the English language.
