Robert Hammerstiel

Robert Hammerstiel ( born February 18, 1933 Werschetz today in Serbian Banat ) is an Austrian painter, printmaker and wood engraver. Hammerstiel find numerous awards international recognition.

Life and work

Between 1944 and 1947 the family banatdeutsche Hammerstiel was interned in 1947 she managed to escape to Austria. There Hammerstiel was early on worked as a painter alongside his livelihood. Besides the representation of motifs from its environment begins Hammerstiel who understands himself as a " survivor of many dead ," work up towards the end of the 1960s, his traumatic childhood experiences.

Between 1959 and 1966 he studied with Professors Gerda Matejka - Rheinfelden, Robert Schmidt and Gerhard Swoboda in Vienna.

In 1985 he was awarded the title of Professor, he lives in Pottschach, Lower Austria and Vienna.

Hammerstiel work focuses on the human dignity, the human condition under the most adverse circumstances, driven by inner fears. He opposed vehemently against the Imperious in man and in society, he complains quietly and at the same time strongly injustice and everlasting states of violence and terror on. Hammerstiel examines the reality behind the apparent truth, and it is hatred and cruelty against which it arises.

Decisive for the hammer handle new work phase is 1988, a trip to New York. He turns, albeit belatedly in art history, the pop art (Milton Avery, Edward Hopper). Staying in New York will be the clear turning point. Hammerstiel breaks new artistic ways. By Shrill and Flash Manhattan impressed he discovered color new and radically simplifies the forms. It provides rooms represents a new way, does not include anything Outlying. His work is henceforth marked by a vibrant color and a radical, almost striking reduction of form to the essentials. 2007, the 73 meter high tower ring on Scots ring in Vienna was concealed for several months on all 4 sides by a monumental work Hammerstiel showing the stages of his life.
