Robert Maxwell, 1st Earl of Nithsdale

Robert Maxwell ( * after 1586; † in May 1646 the Isle of Man), 1st Earl of Nithsdale, 10th Lord Maxwell, was a Scottish nobleman.

Life

His father was John Maxwell, 8th Lord Maxwell; his mother was Elizabeth Douglas, a daughter of David Douglas, 7th Earl of Angus. After the execution of his brother John on 21 May 1613 Edinburgh, he took the title of 10th Lord Maxwell.

Through his impeccable behavior, he was able to restore his family's honor. The Scottish Parliament expressed his personal rehabilitation from on June 28, 1617; on October 5, 1618 was followed by the restoration of the possession of the family, and on August 29, 1620, the official recognition of the title of Lord Maxwell. With this recognition has also been noted that he also had a right to the title of Earl of Morton, who had been awarded to his father in 1581. Meanwhile, this title was, however, awarded to the Douglas family. The king decided "that what it not customary for two Earls to bear the same title" ( it was not appropriate for two Earls to carry the same title ). Subsequently, the title was renamed Earl of Nithisdaill; However, he was not considered a new ceremony, but as a confirmation of the old title.

On April 21, 1619 he was appointed to the Privy Privy Council. Here he succeeded in 1621, all financial claims of the heralds against him by pointing to the "Confirmation of an old title " rejected.

He was outlawed in 1645 and excommunicated in the English Civil War through his loyalty to King Charles I..

By his marriage, concluded on 28 October 1619 Elizabeth Beaumont, daughter of Francis Beaumont, he had a son; Robert, later 2nd Earl, and two daughters; Jean and Elisabeth.
