Robert McKnight

Robert McKnight (* January 20, 1820 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, † October 25, 1885 ) was an American politician. Between 1859 and 1863 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Robert McKnight attended the common schools and a private school in Xenia (Ohio ). In 1839, he graduated from Princeton College. After a subsequent law degree in 1842 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he began working in Pittsburgh in this profession. Between 1847 and 1849 he sat in the City Council. Later he became a member of the Republican Party, founded in 1854.

In the congressional elections of 1858 McKnight was in the 22nd electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Samuel Anderson Purviance on March 4, 1859. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1863 two legislative sessions. These were minted until 1861 by the events in the immediate run-up to the Civil War and in 1861 by the war itself.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Robert McKnight practiced as a lawyer again. He died on October 25, 1885 in his hometown of Pittsburgh, where he was also buried.
