Robert Merz

Robert Merz ( born November 25, 1887 in Vienna, † August 30 1914 in Poturzyn ) was an Austrian football player. The striker played mostly on the position of the right connector and participated with the Austrian national football team at the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912.

Career

Robert Merz began his career at Deutsche young team in 1902 with the Waehring forward Hernals the German sports club merged and in 1904 as a football section of the heavy athletics club Wiener Sport Association, a predecessor of today's Wiener Sport -Club, joined. With the Sports Association, where he worked with Willy Schmieger formed a barely -held strike duo in interaction, Merz 1905 won by a 2-1 final victory over AC Magyar from Budapest the Challenge Cup. 1907 Robert Merz moved to Moldova to the DFC Prague, from where he was first appointed to the national team.

He made his debut in a friendly against England on June 6, 1908 which was held on the occasion of the jubilee of Emperor Franz Joseph. His marksmanship team he presented for the first time in the match against arch-rivals Hungary on May 7, 1911 proof, as he contributed two goals for a 3-1 win. At the Olympic Games in 1912, Merz was in four of the five games of the Austrians in use and culminated with the team under coach Jimmy Hogan then the disappointing second place in the consolation round.

Overall Merz came on 13 missions in the A-team in Austria. However, after the match against Hungary on May 3, (1914, 2-0) his football career took an abrupt end. As a front-line soldier in the First World War, he fell on August 30, 1914 in a clash with Poturzyn by a heart shot as one of the first football player and was buried by his troops in the battle space.
