Robert Paterson (bishop)

Robert Erskine Mar Paterson ( born February 27, 1949 in Wales ) is a British Anglican theologian. He is in the Church of England since 2008 Bishop of Sodor and Man.

Paterson is Celt. He was born in Wales and Scottish and Welsh descent. He attended from 1957 to 1968 King Henry VIII School in Coventry. He studied from 1968 to 1972 theology at St John's College, University of Durham. He was from 1971 to 1972 Van Mildert scholarship ( Van Mildert Scholar in Divinity ). To prepare for the priesthood, he attended the Cranmer Hall College, University of Durham. At the University of Durham in 1971, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in the subjects of English and Theology, 1972, a Diploma ( Diploma ) in theology and in 1972 a Master of Arts (MA; Dunelm )

He was ordained a deacon in Manchester in 1972. In 1973, the priesthood ordained a priest in the Diocese of Brecon ( Diocese of Swansea and Brecon ). His priestly career began from 1972 to 1973 as an auxiliary vicar ( Assistant Curate ) in Harpurhey, Manchester. He was then transferred to the Church in Wales; where he was from 1973 to 1978 Vicar ( Curate ) in Sketty, a suburb of Swansea, in the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon. From 1978 to 1983 he was " Rector " ( pastor ) of Llangattock and Llangynidr in the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon. He was also from 1978 to 1982 " Overseas Officer" in the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon. From 1983 to 1994 he was pastor (Vicar ) in the district in the north of Cardiff Gabalfa, then to 2000 Dean (Team Rector ) in Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan. From 2004 to 2008 he was Canon of the Metropolitan Church in Wales.

In 2006 he was appointed chaplain ( Chaplain ) of the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, appointed, an office he held until 2008. In April 2008, he was, as successor to Graeme Knowles, appointed Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England. On 25 April 2008 he was appointed by John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, consecrated in York Minster bishop. His solemn enthronement took place on 14 June 2008 in the Cathedral Church of St German in Peel on the Isle of Man instead. From 2008 to 2011 Paterson was also Dean of Peel Cathedral.

Paterson hut offices in various national paint and two international church bodies and organizations. From 2000 to 2006 he was Chairman ( Principal Officer ) of the Church in Wales Council for Mission and Ministry. From 2002 to 2009 he was Vice - President ( Vice Chair ) of the Anglican Primates' Working Group on Theological Education. He was also Vice - President ( Vice Chair ) of the Fresh Expressions Board, the Liturgical Commission and Chairman ( Chair ) of the Central Readers' Council of the Church of England. He also wrote several books on issues of liturgy and preaching.

As Bishop of Sodor and Man Paterson also has an "ex officio " seat in the Legislative Council of the Tynwald and voting rights in the Manx Parliament. He was also a member of the Governing Body of the Church in Wales (1974-1983, 1989-1992 and 1995-2006).

Paterson is married. His wife Pauline 's religion teacher ( Teacher of Religious Studies ). They have three grown-up children, a son and two daughters. His hobbies and interests include politics of the day, old music, literature, theater, traveling, gardening, walking, cycling, and life in the country.
