Robert Russell Bennett

Robert Russell Bennett ( born June 15, 1894 in Kansas City, Missouri; † August 18, 1981 in New York City ) was an American composer.

Bennett received his education in 1908 at Carl Busch. On trips to Europe he took lessons with Nadia Boulanger. In 1927 he was awarded the Guggenheim Prize. He worked from 1930 for the film studios of Hollywood and from 1941 as conductor of various radio and television orchestra. 1957 and 2008 he received each a special Tony Award for his contributions to the Broadway musical.

He composed six operas and an operetta, film music, a guitar concerto and a concerto for violin, piano and orchestra, chamber music, an organ sonata and choral works.
