Robert Zimmermann (painter)

August Robert Zimmermann ( * April 21, 1818 in Zittau, † June 6, 1864 in Munich) was a German draftsman, lithographer and landscape painter.

Life

He was the younger brother of the painter Albert and Max and the older brother of Richard Carpenter.

His father was the Zittau town musician Karl Friedrich August Zimmermann (in office 1807-1830 ), from which all the children were given the middle name of August. Like its siblings also received Robert first musical training from his father; he was a pianist and sought a career on stage. Thanks to the suggestion by his older brother, Max, Richard turned first drawing and lithography to, but then also followed the elders to Munich at the painting school and was since 1846 successfully worked as a landscape painter.

His rural motifs he found mainly in Tyrol and Bavarians. The painter -circle around Albert and his three younger brothers was so strongly influenced by them that you spoke only of the " carpenters ". Although he died in comparison to his siblings relatively early, he got them in his lifetime in its effect and not after had a far -reaching circle of buyers; as was, for example, his painting a scouring of 1854 under the title Barn interior at Sotheby's in Melbourne (!) auctioned.
