Roberto Payró

Roberto Jorge Payró ( born April 19, 1867 in Mercedes, Buenos Aires, † April 8, 1928 in Lomas de Zamora Partido Lomas de Zamora) was an Argentine writer and journalist.

Life

Payró was the founder of the newspaper " La Tribuna " in the city of Bahía Blanca, where he has previously published his first newspaper article. After moving to Buenos Aires he worked as an editor at the daily newspaper La Nacion and used this time also to travel within and outside of Argentina.

In 1895 he published a compilation of his articles in the book " Los italianos en la Argentina". His travel diaries led to his first novels: " La Argentina Australia ( Excursión periodística a las costas Patagónicas ) ", " the Tierra del Fuego e Islas de los Estados " and " En las tierras del Inti ". He also wrote for " Caras y Caretas ", a literary journal, edited by Fray Mocho.

During the First World War Payró was a correspondent in Europe. Here he had regular contact with other socialist writers, including Leopoldo Lugones, José Ingenieros and Ernesto de la carcara. Back in Argentina, he joins the socially critical Grupo Boedo, whose most famous member Roberto Arlt was.

Payros novels are characterized by a unique ironic style of speech. He used types of people and everyday situations to illustrate the life of the Italian immigrant. In " Divertidas aventuras del nieto de Juan Moreira " he tells of the political career of a province coupler. Payró also wrote historical novels such as " El falso Inca, una serie de bajo el nombre de cuentos publicados Pago Chico". His last work, " Nuevos cuentos de Pago Chico", was not published until after his death.
