Roberto Rojas
Roberto Antonio Rojas Saavedra ( born August 8, 1957 in Santiago de Chile ) is a former Chilean football goalkeeper. Rojas was national player and gained in 1989 due to a fake injury in World Cup qualifier against Brazil notoriety: for unsporting behavior of Cóndor named players received a lifetime ban.
Club career
As a professional, Rojas played among others at Club de Deportes Aviación from the Región Metropolitana Santiago; 1983 to 1987 he kept the capital club Colo Colo goal, with whom he won the 1983 and 1986 Chilean championship. In 1987 the leaders of the Brazilian first division side FC São Paulo were aware of him, who committed him then at the Copa América. Here he remained until his career end two years later.
National
Rojas celebrated his success in La Roja in the second half of the 1980s. With Chile he took part in the qualifying rounds for the World Championships in 1986 and 1990; at the Copa América 1987, he lost with Chile only in the final with 0-1 against Uruguay.
On September 3, 1989 Rojas was in the Chilean goal in a crucial qualifying match for the World Cup in Italy. In Maracana Chile played against Brazil. In a defeat Chile would not have been qualified for the World Cup. Approximately after 67 minutes, threw Rosenery Mello a firecracker from the stands onto the field. Rojas fell to the ground clutching his bleeding head. He was helped off the pitch; his teammates refused to continue playing - the match was canceled.
A video showed later that the fireworks Rojas had not met. He had taught himself with a smuggled for this purpose in the Goalkeeper glove on the place small scalpel even his bleeding injury. FIFA awarded the match 2-0 for Brazil, Chile was thus not qualified for the World Cup 1990. For the 1994 World Cup in the USA, Chile has been banned; the Chilean Football Federation was fined 100,000 Swiss francs. Rojas was a lock for life. After the goalkeeper had initially denied that he confessed his intrigue in May 1990. 2001 his ban was lifted after an appeal for clemency.
