Rochechouart

Rochechouart ( Occitan Rechoard ) is a commune with 3778 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haute -Vienne in the Limousin region.

Rochechouart is the administrative seat of the arrondissement and canton of Rochechouart Rochechouart. The name is " Roschuar " pronounced.

Geography

Rochechouart is situated in the area of the crater Rochechouart - Chassenon, one of the latest findings of a German -French research teams 200 million years old meteorite crater, which was identified as such until 1967. The city is situated on the banks of Graine, which receives its left tributary Veyres here.

History

Name: Rochechouart is composed of Roca and Cavardus, the first part indicates an easily defensible rocky spur, the second part is the name of that knight who in the year 1000 docked a castle here.

The city was for 800 years the seat of the viscounts of Rochechouart. The coat of arms of the Viscount is now the emblem of the city.
