Staurois latopalmatus is a species in the genus of frogs Winker ( Staurois ) in the family of the Real frogs ( Ranidae ). In English it is called rock skipper, because most of the time he is staying on rocks.

Features

Staurois latopalmatus has very strong hind legs that enable a wide jumping from stone to stone. Males grow to 50, females up to 70 mm long. Of the other species of the genus is Staurois latopalmatus distinguished by the strong webbed fingers, which reach up to the finger discs as well as by the very short, pug -like snout.

Distribution and threat

The species is endemic to Borneo. There they spread widely over Sarawak, Brunei, Sabah and Kalimantan, practically all over the island. Specimens have been found at altitudes between 150 and 1000 meters.

In some parts of the island, the frog is very common. On the Red List of the species is listed as not threatened (Least Concern LC). The biggest danger here of the deforestation of the rainforest. However, the frog can also occur in already devastated areas in the vicinity of primary forests.

Habitat

Staurois latopalmatus lives in primary tropical lowland rain forests. It usually hits him on vertical rock walls to sitting. Preferably along clear, fast-flowing, rocky streams or creeks.

Behavior

At night, the males call with a high trill. On reproductive behavior of this type is not known, tadpoles were not found.
