Rod Carew

Rodney " Rod" Cline Carew ( born October 1, 1945 in Gatun, Panama ) is a former baseball player from Panama in Major League Baseball.

Life

Rod Carew at the age of 16 years wandered from Panama with his family to New York City. There he lived in the vicinity of Yankee Stadium and the former Polo Grounds. His professional baseball career began as a second baseman for the Minnesota Twins on April 11, 1967. Equal in his first year as a pro, he was nominated as the American League All Star, to be followed by another seventeen consecutive appointments. In addition, he received the title of Rookie of the Year. Seven times he won the title of best batsman in his career. The first success in this category succeeded him in 1969. Between 1972 and 1975 he won this category four times in a row for themselves, something that Ty Cobb had only succeeded before him. In 1976 he moved to the position of the first baseman to prolong his career. Again, he was close to winning the batting title, but had to on the last day of the season George Brett defeated by the Kansas City Royals. In 1977, he led the American League with a batting average of 38.8 %, the second best mark since Ted Williams in 1941 with 40.6 % as the last player to date surpassed the magic mark of 40%. In that year he also won the title of MVP of the AL.

In 1979, Carew to the California Angels, as the Minnesota Twins could not maintain their promising young talent and could not play for the title. The New York Yankees and the San Francisco Giants had applied to his services. With the Angels, he reached for the first time since 1970, again the play-offs. As early as 1969 and 1970 with the Twins, he is now subject with his new club in the American League Championship Series against the Baltimore Orioles. His last appearance in the ALCS he had in 1982 when the Angels the Milwaukee Brewers documents in five games. The final game in the Major League Carew denied on October 5, 1985. 3053 base hits and a batting average of 32.8 %. 1991 in his first possible election year he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

After his baseball playing career, he worked as a hitting coach for the Angels and the Brewers. On 19 January 2004 the National Stadium in Panama was renamed Rod Carew Stadium.
