Roger Matton

Roger Matton ( born May 18, 1929 in Granby / Québec; † 7 June 2004, Québec) was a Canadian composer, music teacher and ethnomusicologist.

Life

Matton studied at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec in Montreal with Claude Champagne, Gabriel Cusson, Isabelle Delorme and Arthur Letondal. In Paris with Nadia Boulanger, he took in 1950 he Andrée Vaurabourg - Honegger and 1952 private lessons. He also studied in 1950 and 1953 to 1954 at the Paris Conservatoire with Olivier Messiaen.

Upon his return to Canada Matton worked for the CBC. After studying at the ethnologists and anthropologists Marius Barbeau at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Matton worked from 1956 for twenty years in the Archives de folklore of Laval University. Here he transcribed inter alia, over three hundred folk song recordings on tape by Dominique Gauthier, one of which appeared in a selection pressure and a recording. He also taught at Laval University Composition ( his most famous pupil was Alain Gagnon ), from 1960 history of contemporary music and 1963-1989 ethnomusicology.

Matton composed predominantly large symphonic works and concertos, but in addition also works for chamber orchestra, organ and piano. He received the 1965 Prix de création musicale canadienne, 1969 Prix de musique Calixa Lavallée - and 1975 the Lynch - Staunton Award. In 1984 he was Officer of the Order of Canada. 1987 Radio Canada International sent a four -part documentary of his works.
