Roger Piantoni ( born December 26, 1931 in Étain / Meuse ) is a former French footballer.

Childhood and youth

The grandson of Italian immigrants grew up with his grandparents in Lorraine, after his mother died in 1933 from blood poisoning and his father had been deported to Germany from 1940 to 1946. After school Piantoni completed training in the local ore mine La Mourière, but the first boy to his family no longer as a miner, but as a land surveyor. Piantoni came from a football-mad family - his uncle Romeo Beneventi was 1942/43, at Red Star under contract - and first played in the U.S. (later ES) Piennes, one after the Second World War very successful amateur club from Roger Piantonis residence, which also Thadée Cisowski had grown and it was called the " 6 Italians and 5 Poland - or vice versa." Here he formed the coach Hans " Jean " Blaschek, a former player at Wacker Wien and FC Metz, and in that time he also won his first French league title: after a 6-3 over the team from Nord-Pas -de- Calais ( resulted in its ranks, a certain Raymond Kopaczewski director) was Piantoni with the junior national team ( Cadets ) of Lorraine in the final of this competition. As a prelude to the men's Cup final ( against Lille Lens) on May 9, 1948 Stade Yves- du- Manoir Colombes Lorraine won against the team of the Provence- Côte- d'Azur (including with Francis Méano ) due to two - Piantoni Goals 2: 1

The club career

His professional career began in the season 1950/51 in his native Lorraine at FC Nancy, where he along with his strike partner, the Left Wing Léon Deladerrière, quickly formed a dangerous duo. DC in his very first season Piantoni was charged with 28 -goal top scorer of the Division 1 already at 20 he was first appointed to the national team ( 1-1 in Ireland) and led there as well equally successful with his goal a. The lanky, linksfüßige and technically brilliant attacking player is described in spite of his early, steep ascent as unfailingly polite and humble at the same time as " the most gifted and versatile French kicker of his generation" (D. Chaumier ). In 1954, both Internazionale Milano and Juventus tried therefore to oblige him, and he asked his President to allow him this opportunity of returning to his roots. The however, rejected without further explanation - and the disappointed Piantoni pondered for a time seriously, stop all the professional sports. Deeper still hit him then what he learned only years later (and not of Nancy's, but of Reims ' President Henri Germain ): Nancy had long been committed to the inside forward, if at all, then leave only to Stade de Reims.

When the FC Nancy, which despite Piantoni always reached for six years only one place in mid-table, even in 1957 were relegated to the second division, which at that time most successful French club made from the Champagne region of this option and committed Piantoni. The terms of this transfer are typical of the French professional football at that time: Reims had secured the right of first refusal on the number 10 already since 1952 by annual payments still not known height. As Piantonis sale due to the descent was financially necessary, Reims had additionally the record-breaking transfer fee amount of 25 million pay Francs and two players (Jean Templin and Raoul Scholl hammer ) free to give Nancy - was asked none of the footballers involved.

In Reims, Roger Piantoni was after all now with the likes of Armand Penverne, Robert Jonquet, Jean Vincent and Just Fontaine in a team - and indeed already " seasoned " 20 times national player had no problems with it to fit into this team under coach Albert Batteux. The fact that this happened to everyone's benefit, can be seen in the successes Stade Reims with and through Piantoni gathered up: In his first year (1957 /58) achieved the double ( league and cup ); Fontaine won the top scorer (34 goals), but also at least Piantoni contributed 17 goals to win the title at. 1960 and 1962 came another national champion to 1959 and as the crowning achievement of the European Cup finals ( 0:2 against Real Madrid). For Piantoni itself as for many of his teammates also fell into this time nor the third place with the national team at the World Championships in Sweden, until then the biggest success of Équipe Tricolore. In addition, the left-footer in 1961 again top scorer in Division 1: he scored as ten years ago, 28 hits. However, he was increasingly plagued by injuries - caused by rude attacks of many opponents who Piantonis technology had nothing to oppose to another - and had to be operated several times. In particular, the consequences of the brutal boarding the Bulgarian defender Largov in October 1959 ( double knee break ) he has never fully recovered: 1961/62 he played only 18, 1962/63 use only six of 38 league matches. That's why he ended his international career already in 1961.

As Reims in 1964 only surprising Table was to Piantoni closed - where this season also descended OGC Nice, the then succeeded the immediate revival and the 1965/66 a good mid-table in the - in common with the equally from Lorraine to Reims -down Bruno Rodzik Division 1 finished. That was the time to quit football for Piantoni.
