Roger Schank

Roger C. Schank ( born 1946 ) is an American cognitive scientist.

Schank doctorate in linguistics at the University of Texas and was from 1974 to 1989 professor of computer science and psychology at Yale University, where he headed the Artificial Intelligence project. In addition, he conducted research at the Universities of Paris and Stanford. He founded the Cognitive Science Society and was co-founder of cognitive science journal Journal of Cognitive Science. In 1989 he founded the Institute of Learning Sciences (ILS ) at Northwestern University and the Center for the Learning Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University.

In the 1970s and 1980s, he made innovative contributions in the research of artificial intelligence, in particular, with its concepts of Case- Based Reasoning, script and Dynamic Memory. Traditional approaches of cognition research came from a rule-governed manipulation of symbols. Schank, however, postulated a model of memory, which is organized in the form of meaningful episodes. Learning and problem solving can be mapped as processes that utilize stored in memory for similar cases in this model.

In 1994, the company Schank Cognitive Arts, which develops multimedia applications for computer-based training. 2002 followed by the establishment of Socratic Arts, an e -learning providers. In addition, he has authored numerous books on the subject of learning, language, artificial intelligence, education, e-learning etc.
