Rye Castle (French rye Bourg ) is a municipality in the district of Laufen in the canton of Basel -Country in Switzerland.

Geography

Rye Castle, the westernmost municipality in the canton, is situated on 566 m above sea level. M. and 8 km north of Delémont, the capital of the canton of Jura (air line). The farming village extends on a north-facing slope above the Lützeltal, in the hills of the northern Jura.

The area of ​​6.7 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the northern Jura folds. The northern boundary follows the whole length of the La Petite, which also forms the border between Switzerland and France at the same time. From Lützeltal the municipal area extends south to the Rieji ( 693 m above sea level. M. ), the mountain of the village, as well as the hares Schell, the 855 m above sea level. Economy

The community is still predominantly agricultural. There are few jobs outside the agricultural sector in the village. Many workers ( over 60 %) are therefore commuters. Every year is Roggenburg venue of an international motocross race.

Traffic

The community is located far away from the major thoroughfares. The main access is from the street through the Lützeltal that leads, however, over French territory. Rye Castle is one hand tied by a postal car course of running, on the other hand by a Delémont via Movelier to public transport.

History

The municipality's territory remains of a Roman watch tower and coins were found dating from Roman times. His first mention of the village is 1207 Rokinberc. The name derives from the Latin word rogus ( pyre pyre ). Rye Castle belonged to the Counts of Thierstein 1454 and went over to the Prince-Bishopric of Basel.
