Rohrau, Austria

Rohrau is a market town with 1534 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Bruck an der Leitha in Lower Austria ( Austria ).

Rohrau is the birthplace of the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn and his brother Michael Haydn.

History

Rohrau is located in close proximity to the historical Carnuntum, a major in ancient Roman military camp ( now the town Petronell / Carnuntum ) to a link road (now B211 ) between the fortifications legionary fortress of Carnuntum and lock Prugg ( Bruck an der Leitha, which goes back to a Roman system and the next possible river crossing with a bridge over the Leitha was ). Rohrau has always been a place of transit.

In the 13th century there was a Rohrauer line of the house of Liechtenstein, who resided in the precursor of the local castle Rohrau.

  • Rohrau Castle: late baroque castle. The facade of the palace is one of the few examples of simple " Josephine " style that prevailed under Emperor Joseph II.
