Roland the Farter

Roland the fart or the Baldwin fart was a Kunstfurzer in medieval England.

Life

He possessed the fief Hemingstone Manor in Suffolk. He was committed for at any Christmas " unum et saltum siffletum et unum bumbulum " ( " a leap, a whistle and a fart " ) perform at the court of King Henry II.

Roland is listed in the Liber feodorum ( "Book of taxes" ). The passage reads ( the year 1250):

" Seriantia que quondam fuit Rollandi le Pettour in Hemingeston ' in Comitatu Suff ', pro qua Debuit facere the Natali Domini singulis annis coram domino brisk unum et saltum sifflettum et unum bumbulum, ... Translation: The Serjeanty that of Rolland le Pettour was formerly in Hemingstone in the county of Suffolk, for which he on the day of birth of the Lord before the Lord and King had a jump, do a whistle and a fart every year ... "

Before the feud is described as follows ( the year 1244):

" Edmundus de Breinton ' tenet Hemelingeston ' cum pertineciis, ... et est ista seriancia faciendi unum saltum, siffletum, et pettum. Translation: Edmundus de Breinton 'has Hemelingeston ' with all accessories, ... and this Serjeanty needs a jump, do a whistle and a fart. "

The process is - under the name Baldwinus le Pettour - mostly quoted in Camden's description of Britain in the increased edition published in Latin in 1610 and in English translation in 1607 in print:

" Hemingston tenuit in qua terras Baldwinus Le Pettour ( notato mihi nomen ) by Seriantiam, loquor ex Antiquo libello, pro qua Debuit facere natali Domini singulis the annis coram Domino brisk Angliae, saltum unum, unum suffletum, & unum bumbulum, vel ut alibi legitur, by saltum, sufflum & pettum, i. intelligo si, ut saltaret, buccas cum sonitu inflaret, & ventris crepitum ederet. "

" Hemingston, In Which Baldwin Le Pettour ( brand his name well) certaine lands held by Serjeanty he ( the words I have out of an old booke ) For Which on Christmas day ever yeere before our soveraigne Lord the King of England shoulderstand performe one saltus, one suffletus, and one bumbulus, or, as we read elsewhere, his tenour which by saltum, sufflum, et pettum, did is, if I understand synthesis tearmes aright, did he shoulderstand daunce, buffering up his cheekes marking there with a sound, and besides let a cracke downeward. "

" Hemingston worinn, Baldwinus le Pettour ( hearken to me this name probably ) some Gütter by Seriantiam (I speak from an ancient book ) maintained, in which he at the annual H. Christmas before the men kings in Engelland saltum unum, unum suffletum and unum make bumbulum Solte, or how anderstwo to read by saltum, sufflum and pettum that is, how shall I understand that he jump, inflate the cheeks with a sound, and can sweep a wind Solte.
