Rolf Appel

Rolf Appel ( born February 25, 1921 in Hamburg -Harburg; † 30 January 2012) was a German chemist and university teacher. His field of work was particularly the inorganic phosphorus chemistry.

Life

Appel studied chemistry in Halle and in 1951 received his doctorate at the University of Heidelberg in Margot Becke- Goehring. He took over in 1962 a chemistry professor at the University of Bonn. Named after him is discovered by him Appel reaction for the synthesis of chloro alkanes from alcohols with triphenylphosphine and carbon tetrachloride. He retired in 1986.
