Rolladen Schneider LSD Ornith

The LSD Ornith is a two-seater glider. The LSD Ornith (D for double seater ) is a rather private arisen glider with high efficiency. It was designed by Wolf Lemke. The first flight took place on 8 May 1971 a few weeks before the Braunschweig SB - 10th She was thus the first two-seater in plastic design.

As far as possible parts from the single-seater production of the LS- 1 were used. Later, she was still converted to the tail of a LS3, so that they now have a muted tailplane. The hull was almost unchanged from the LS-1. This has the result that it is very narrow in the cockpit. The pedals are near the rear seat at the height of the front operating lever. The hood is in two parts and is about back up to the Holmes. The hull has a fixed wheel and a small skid. What is striking is the very large rudder. The wings were extended at the root by about 1.50 m. This results in a span of 18 meters. The negative sweep of the wings is two degrees. As a landing aid Schempp- Hirth brakes are on the top surface. The two-seater has two separate clutches for winch launch and aerotow and provides aeronautical no special requirements. It is interesting in light of today's two-seater proportions of overweight Empty weight of the LSD of 287 kg. This can not be compared easily with a regular two-seater but because of the mentioned details.

In Samedan / Switzerland and in South Africa with several impressive record flights were made with the LSD Ornith.

The LSD Ornith remained unique. It stands today in a glider museum on the water dome.
